Dominic A. Grasso, 82, of Olathe, Kan., and formerly of Oelwein, Iowa, died on Sunday afternoon, Feb. 12, 2012, at Sunrise Assisted Living in Leawood, Kan.
Mass of the Resurrection will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Oelwein, Iowa, with Rev. Harry Koelker officiating. Visitation will be from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Oelwein. Rosary service will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Scripture service will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Oelwein, with military graveside services. Dominic Anthony Grasso was born on April 17, 1929, at Oelwein, Iowa, the son of Charles George and Maria Rose (Latanza) Grasso. He graduated from Oelwein High School in the class of 1948. Dom then served in the United States Marine Corp. for four years during the Korean War. Following his military service, he enrolled at Upper Iowa University at Fayette where he graduated with a degree in education. Dom was united in marriage to Donna LaVera Stalker on Aug. 22, 1953, at Rockford, Iowa. Dom taught and coached at various schools in Glenville, Pleasantville, Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa, Keokuk, Iowa, and at Garrigan Catholic High School in Algona, Iowa. He received his master’s degree at Northeast Missouri State in Kirksville, Mo. Dom was the Oelwein High School principal from 1977 until 1995. After his retirement in 1995, he and Donna moved to Olathe, Kan., to be near family. Dom was a member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church and the American Legion both in Olathe. He was past president of the Iowa Association of School Administrators and a past member of the Oelwein Exchange Club.
Dominic is survived by his two sons: Charles “Ed” (Angela) Grasso of Leawood, Kan., and Dominic (Barbara) Grasso of Fredericksburg, Va.; eight grandchildren: Nathan (Natalie) Person of Sacramento, Calif., Danielle Grasso of Leawood, Kan., Blake Grasso, Alexis Grasso, Ana Grasso, Chase Grasso, Isabella Grasso and Ava Grasso all of Fredericksburg, Va.; great-grandson, Dominic Person; sister, Anne (James) Kennicott of Jesup; brother, Anthony (Nellie) Grasso of Hazleton, Iowa; sister-in-law, Veronica Stalker of Clive, Iowa; brother-in-law, Ed (Donna) Stalker of Albert Lea; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Donna, on Jan. 28, 2012; daughter, Rose Person, and her husband, Nate; grandson, Giovanni Grasso; two sisters: Mary Grasso and Dorothy Yoch; seven brothers-in-law: Steven Stalker, Lyle Stalker, Rodney Stalker, Charles Stalker, Jim Krause, Henry Gorzynski and Emil Yoch; and three sisters-in-law: Norma Krause, Audrey Gorzynski and Maxine Stalker.
