Vernon Wood

The funeral service for Vernon J. Wood of Albert Lea, will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday at Bonnerup Funeral Service, Albert Lea. The Rev. Jeff Laeger-Hagemeister will officiate. Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour before services at the funeral home.
Vernon died at the Albert Lea Medical Center on Sunday, Dec. 28, 2008, surrounded by the love of his family.
Vernon John was born on Aug. 24, 1934, at Lake City, the son of John Rubin and Lillian (Farrand) Wood.
He married Anita M. Johnson on Dec. 16, 1950.
Vernon was an Albert Lea resident all of his life except for May of 1976 until July of 1988 when he lived in northeast Mason City, Iowa. During this time he and Anita owned Camp-At-The-Woods Campground until his health had him returning to Albert Lea. He had been employed by Scotsman (formerly Queen Stoves) for 35 years retiring in December of 1987. He had also served as the financial secretary for the United Steel Workers Union 3539 for which he had been a member from 1952-1988.
He was also a member of Moose Lodge 1703 since 1962 where he was a member of the degree team and was a past governor.
He is survived by his wife, Anita (Johnson) Wood, of Albert Lea; four daughters: Vickie (Steve) Seul of Albert Lea, Linda Geyen of Bloomington, Kathy Van Riper of Rochester, and Debbie ( Jay) Flink of Albert Lea; grandchildren: Jenna (Matthew) Olivero, Jamie (Jason) Kormanik, Christopher Seul, Daniel (Liz) Geyen, Blake Geyen and fianceé Mandy Thelen, Kimberly (Jim) Sash, Elizabeth (Eric) Miller, Luke (Angie) Brech, Preston Flink, Kitty Flink; great-grandchildren: Anthony, Blaine and Logan Olivero, Nathaniel, Madeline, Ashlynn, Alexander and William Sash, Barrett and Gunner Geyen; sister Shirley and ( Herbert) Handt of New York Mills; sister-in-law, Diane (Steve) Lundberg of Atlanta, Ga.; brother-in-law, Kevin (Jean) Johnson of Hutchinson; several nieces and nephews; and special friends: Jerry and Dorothy Weber and Bob and Joyce Dombroske.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents; his parents, Lillian (Farrand) and John R. Wood; brother-in-law, James Estes; in-laws, Welden and Cylvia (Brooks) Johnson; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be preferred to the Minnesota Multiple Schlerosis Society or the donor’s choice.
