Sylvan Foss

Memorial services for Sylvan Foss, 91, formerly of Hartland will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Cross of Glory Lutheran Church. The Rev. Dennis Frank will officiate. Military Honors will be accorded by area veteran’s organizations. Friends may greet the family one hour prior to the service at the church.
Sylvan died Thursday, Dec. 18, 2008, at Talahi Care Center in St. Cloud.
Sylvan Foss was born on July 30, 1917, to Julius and Clara (Nelson) Foss in Hazen, N.D. The family moved to the Hartland area where Sylvan attended school in Hartland and Freeborn. After high school, he worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps. Sylvan served in the United States Army in the south Pacific during WWII. After serving in the army, Sylvan returned to the Hartland area and was united in marriage to Elvira Bangert on January 20, 1946 at the Concordia Lutheran Church in Pickerel Lake. Sylvan worked on the family farm for a time and then went to work as a welder for Queen Stoves, which later became Scotsman. Sylvan was an active member of the Cross of Glory Lutheran Church serving on the board of deacons, was church custodian and caretaker for several cemeteries. He was also a member of the American Legion and VFW. Sylvan enjoyed gardening both vegetables and in his later years, flowers.
Survivors include his children, Juel R. Foss of Pagosa Springs, Colo., Patty Foss of Little Falls, and Maxine Berg of Sauk Rapids; grandchildren, Heather Flikke, Sheila (Jayme) Benson, Jill Berg, and June Berg; great-grandchildren, Elaine Lampe, Luke Benson, Nick Benson, and Matt Benson; sisters, Arliss Semrud and Marietta Jones both of Mesa, Ariz.; brother, Jack Foss also of Mesa, Ariz.; many in-laws, nieces and nephews.
Sylvan was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Elvira; brothers, Estin and Jewell; and sister, Maisie Foss.
