At the age of 17 months, he came to live with Lucille and Oscar Moen. Gene graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1947. He was united in marriage Oct. 15, 1950 to Dorothy (Brua) Moen at Silver Lake Lutheran Church, Northwood, Iowa.
Gene and his wife lived on their family farm in rural Emmons (Worth County, Iowa) their entire married lives. He worked as a skilled craftsman, building homes and cabinets for many local families. He and his wife were long time members of Emmons Lutheran Church. He was a member of various clubs and organizations.
Gene and Dorothy raised two daughters Paulette and Shelly who both went on to be pharmacists. Gene was very proud of his children and three grandchildren and three great granddaughters. Gene made each of them a hand crafted piece of furniture that will be treasured forever.
Gene and his wife enjoyed traveling, visiting all 50 United States and Europe in their 58 years of marriage. He was a passionate reader, devouring books daily from the local library. Boating and fishing were also favorite pastimes, as you could often find him dipping his fishing line in many lakes. In recent years, each morning Gene would visit his friends in town and order his Pepsi. He always had a Pepsi.
Gene is survived by his wife, Dorothy; two daughters Paulette and husband Stan Dahlby, Overland Park, Kan., and Shelly and husband Patrick Brackey, Marceline, Mo.; his three grandchildren James and wife Heather, Audra and husband Brad, and Julie; and three great-granddaughters, Megan, Madigan and Kate.
