Weekend Planner: Fun abounds for St. Patty’s Day

St. Patrick’s Day is on a Saturday this year, and local bars and restaurants are hoping you celebrate it with a night out. Where It Matters, at 1119 S. Broadway Ave., will host Blu Simon at 9:30 p.m. Blue Simon plays classic rock similar to Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and other 1970s groups. They will also have free corned beef and cabbage while supplies last and specials on green beer and Irish whiskey.
Grandma’s Kitchen in the Northbridge Mall food court will have a $7.50 special on either the reuben basket with fries and pop or the reuben and Irish stew. They’re open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. The Trumble’s will have shamrock shakes, corned beef and cabbage and reuben sandwiches all day Saturday starting at 11 a.m.
Eddie’s Bar in Albert Lea will have green beer and other specials starting at 11 a.m. Saturday. There will be a leprechaun contest, with the top two winning prizes, and karaoke starts at 4 p.m. The Moose Lodge in Albert Lea will have reuben sandwiches, corned beef and cabbage and beef stew. There will be drink specials and Soundwave Entertainment starts at 7 p.m.
Today
• A sloppy joe luncheon will be held as a fundraiser for four adults about to embark on a mission trip to the Balkan region in Europe through Grace Christian Church in Albert Lea. The luncheon is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the chapel in St. John’s Lutheran Home. Menu includes sloppy joe, potato salad, chips, cookie and drink. The suggested donation is $6.
• A Boy Scouts of America fundraiser will be held at Wedgewood Cove Golf Club from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
Saturday
• The March Madness cattle show will be from noon to 5 p.m. at the Freeborn County Fairgrounds. This is the ninth year it will be at the fairgrounds, and exhibitors come from Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin and South Dakota.
• The Sons of the American Legion will hold a hamburger feed from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Alden American Legion club. Donations will be accepted.
• The Freeborn County Dancing with the Stars event will be at 7 p.m. in the auditorium at Albert Lea High School. Tickets are $10, $15 or $20 and can be bought at the door before the show; call 373-4544 to purchase tickets in advance.
• The Albert Lea Figure Skating Club hosts its annual show at 7 p.m. This year’s theme is “Spin through the Jungle.” Skaters from tiny tots to high school seniors perform, and a guest skater from Rochester Figure Skating Club will also perform. Tickets are available from club members in advance for $8 for adults and $6 per child and at the door for $9 for adults and $7 for children. Children under age 5 get in free.
• The Lighthouse Event Center in Albert Lea will host a concert featuring Kyle Neidermeier, Colin Milliron, Indiscrepancy, Holly Rykes and Andrew Ables. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for students. Tickets are available at Marshall Street Music, Hy-Vee, Stadheim Jewelers in Albert Lea and at Coffee House on Main in Austin.
• A comedy show will be held as a fundraiser for the Albert Lea High School boys’ tennis team at 8 p.m. at America’s Best Value Inn. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Headliner is Nathan Timmel, feature act is Elle K and Jeff Polis will be the master of ceremony. The show is for ages 18 and older.
• Guitarists Lheto and Wright will play at the Paramount Theatre in Austin at 7:30 p.m. Cost is $10 in advance, $12 at the door and $5 for students.
Sunday
• VFW Post No. 447 will host a breakfast to honor area veterans and Vietnam era veterans. There will be a display featured during the event, which is at the American Legion in Albert Lea from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Menu includes pancakes, eggs, sausage, coffee, milk and juice. Cost is $7 for adults ($1 will go to Beyond the Yellow Ribbon) and $3 for children.
• The Albert Lea Alano Club will hold a fundraiser breakfast at 1005 Ulstad Ave. in Albert Lea from 8 a.m. to noon. Cost is $5 and menu includes pancakes, French toast, sausage, eggs, hashbrowns, toast, juice and coffee.
• The Albert Lea Eagles Club will host a fundraiser pancake breakfast for the Grizzlies football team from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Cost is $7 at the door or $6 in advance.
• The Emmons American Legion will host a Spuds & Sundaes fundraiser from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Any donations received will go toward expenses for the new Emmons Community Library, Emmons summer recreation and other community improvements. Menu includes baked potatoes with a wide variety of toppings; dessert will be a make-your-own ice cream sundae.
