The following are some of the volunteer opportunities currently open in Freeborn County. If you can help with any of them or would like to volunteer for others, call Pat Stumme, Retired and Senior Volunteer Program director, at Senior Resources, 377-7433.

Albert Lea Schools: Elementary schools are having parent conferences Sept. 1 and 2 and volunteers are still needed to encourage parents to pick up their copies of the Out of School Activity Guide. This involves just sitting near the information table at the door and visiting with parents as they come and go. Call Pat at 377-7433 to sign up for a two or three hour shift.

Knitting Helpers: Can you help children ages 7-12 learn to knit using either needles or a lap-loom? All supplies are provided on Wednesday’s from 4:15 to 5 p.m. this fall, October to November so you just need to provide a guiding presence. Call Carolyn Smith, Kids for Christ director, at 507-383-5272 to lend a hand.

Feeding America One Child at a Time: This new program by the Salvation Army begins with one child at a time to assure they have quality, nourishing foods over the weekends when school meal programs are not available. Volunteers are needed at the Salvation Army to help fill the child-size backpacks, deliver them to Halverson School and distribute them to registered families. These tasks can be done independently on Thursdays with distributions on Fridays beginning Sept. 9 and 10. Volunteers of any age or groups are welcome. RSVP, a program of Senior Resources of Freeborn County, receives some funding through the United Way of Freeborn County, the Minnesota Board on Aging and the Corporation for National and Community Service.
