Weekend Planner: Regional show choirs are coming to Albert Lea

Get ready for flying skirts and tunes from all eras — Albert Lea will host its 17th annual show choir competition Saturday. Choirs start performing at 9 a.m. and evening finals will be at 7 p.m.

Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for students. Lunch will be served all day. The competition will be held in the auditorium at Albert Lea High School.

Schools competing include: Hastings High School, Jackson County Central High School, North High School of St. Paul, East High School of Sioux City, Iowa, Hill-Murray High School of Maplewood, New Prague Senior High School, Emmetsburg (Iowa) High School, Onalaska (Wis.) High School, Adrian High School and Bloomington Jefferson High School.

Friday

• Albert Lea’s Seventh-day Adventist Church hosts a showing of the documentary “Forks Over Knives” at 6:30 p.m. at the church on Highway 69. The event is free. There will be books given away, healthy dishes to sample and a gift for attending.

• “The Common Thread” plays Austin’s Paramount Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Cost is $10 in advance and $12 at the door.

Saturday

• Albert Lea High School hosts an all-day regional show choir competition in its auditorium.

• Northbridge Mall hosts an outdoor expo for children from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

• The Freeborn Sons of the American Legion will host an all-you-can-eat spaghetti supper from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the Freeborn Legion hall. Menu includes spaghetti with meatballs, garlic toast and cookie bars. Cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children under age 10.

• The Alden American Legion will host Smokin’ Brothers BBQ from 5 to 8 p.m. Cost ranges from $8 to $12 for ribs, chicken or brisket.

Sunday

• The Sons of Norway lodge will hold a pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost is $7.

• The Alden Lions will host a pancake breakfast at the school in Alden from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Donations will be accepted. Menu includes Denny Brue’s famous pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, juice, milk and coffee. All proceeds will benefit projects in the community.

• The Albert Lea American Legion will host a pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Cost is $7, and children under age 6 get in free.

• Carol’s Dance Studio will host a performance at 2 p.m. at Northbridge Mall.

• An open house honoring the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouts will be from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Freeborn County Historical Museum. Girl Scouts get in free and their parents have a reduced admission fee of $3. General admission is $5.
