ID makes sense for voting

This letter is in response to a letter from Kent Laugen of Red Wing. I am unsure why? Why is requiring a state-approved ID an unnecessary barrier to students, women, minorities and the elderly? Why should you not have your ID with you when you vote? Have you gone to the library to check out a book? They know me there. Doesn’t matter. If I do not have my library card I do not get a book. I sell fishing licenses for the state of Minnesota. If my neighbor comes in to buy a license — and does not have his Minnesota ID — I cannot sell him a license, even though I know who he is, where he lives and have no doubt that he is a resident of the state. Why not voters? Voting is surely more important than fishing. Is it that hard to get an ID? When I sell federally regulated items to a person who has to prove they are a resident — they have to provide me with 90 continuous days of receipts to prove they are a resident — such as heat, electricity or rent. Would this be better than just getting an ID? I believe I live in Mayberry, and we do not have bad people living here. So? Who is going to rent the buses so we can drive around the state, register and vote? Elaine Hart Albert Lea
