Weekend Planner: Sew Day is on the way

Community Sew Day, part of the local Shinefest celebration, will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The event will be at the Senior Center in Skyline Plaza.

People can come all day or for however long they can sew. Bring your own sewing machine, scissors, pins and a sack lunch. Sewing kits for various projects will be provided, including quilts, baby bibs, dresses and personal care bags.

Friday

• The Albert Lea High School jazz bands will host a free concert at 7 p.m. in the commons area at the school.

 

Saturday

• Community Sew Day will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Senior Center in Skyline Plaza.

• Hy-Vee hosts a Walk-A-Thon around Fountain Lake for the American Red Cross starting and ending at Brookside Education Center. The walk starts at 10 a.m., and you can register the day of the walk before it starts.

• The public is invited to a 40th anniversary celebration at Lou-Rich, 505 W. Front St. There will be tours and refreshments.

• The Arc of Freeborn County invites the public to its annual Bowl-A-Thon event at Holiday Lanes from 1 to 3 p.m. The cost is $6, plus at least one pledge, for two games. Bowling is free with $25 in pledges, and free with eligibility for the grand prizes with $45 or more in pledges. Proceeds go to Arc’s programs for people with disabilities. Anyone who’s interested in participating, sponsoring a bowler or donating cash or items for prizes should call 377-3469.

• The Freeborn County Historical Museum will host an open house from to 2 to 4 p.m. The event is free to the public, and board members will be on duty to answer questions about the museum.

• A Zumba-thon will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Skyline Plaza as a fundraiser for the Freeborn County Relay for Life. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door.

 

Sunday

• Walters firefighters will host their annual Ultimate Firefighters Feast at the Walters fire hall from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost is $8 for adults and $5 for children under age 8. Menu includes made-to-order omelets, French toast, pancakes, eggs, sausage and more.

• The Masonic Lodge will host an Amaranth pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The menu includes pancakes, eggs, sausage, orange juice and coffee. Students from the high school’s music department will wait tables.

• A breakfast brunch will be from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to support The Brue Crew for the Relay for Life. Cost is $7, and the event will be held at the American Legion in Albert Lea.

• An open house at the Albert Lea Art Center will be held for its next show, which features the art collection of Thoburn and Marge Thompson. The open house is from 1 to 3 p.m. and the show runs through May 26 at the art center.
