Here are highlights in history for Sept. 9, gleaned from the files of the Albert Lea Tribune:

1984 — The state’s Department of Natural Resources said the death of a large number of rough fish in the channel between Fountain and Albert Lea Lakes was caused by oxygen deficiency in the water.

1974 — About 2,500 residents, workers and school children were evacuated from a square mile area around Swanhill Drive and Gateway Avenue after a gas line was ruptured by a construction crew.

1944 — A drive to collect wastepaper for the war effort resulted in 34,170 pounds being donated by people in the Albert Lea area.
