Bolan Fall Market Sept. 18
Published 11:16 am Saturday, September 11, 2010
This little town of 26 people is hosting its eighth annual Bolan Fall Market on Sept. 18.
Bolan is in Worth County about six miles southeast of Northwood.
The United Methodist Church is hosting its traditional bazaar from 8 to 11 a.m. A variety of market vendors under the big maple trees and along Tulip Lane will be selling goods from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
At 9 a.m., Art and JoAnn White of rural Bolan will be publicly thanked and ring the bell to signal the start of the bicycle ride. They donated the original 1923 Barton No. 2 school bell to the Bolan Schoolhouse & Cultural Center, and it has been placed in the recreated bell tower, as part of the nonprofit organization’s restoration/rehabilitation of the school. The school will then be open from 9 a.m. to noon, for “Come and See the Progress” walk-throughs. Dr. Kris Meyer will provide a “Schoolhouse Story Telling” in front of the school at noon.
The riders will travel from Bolan though the neighboring communities of Plymouth, Rock Falls, Grafton and Carpenter. A highlight on the route will be the paved path to the historic, wooden, covered bridge along the Shell Rock River in Rock Falls.
Local keyboard musician, Kermit Huebner will play from 8 a.m. to noon and Crosser from noon to 4 p.m.
The following demonstrations will begin at 12:30 p.m.: walleye cheek tasting, glass bead making, cider making and rug hooking.
Curbside Concession will have turkey burgers, turkey tenders, brats, hot dogs, tator ribbons, super nachos, strawberry smoothies, mini-donuts, homemade pies, ice cream and popcorn for purchase.
A special wine tasting will be from 1 to 4 p.m. For a $10 donation, participants can experience appetizers and wine tasting from five Iowa wineries: Bel-Aire Estates of St. Ansgar, Little Swan Lake of Estherville, Mount Valley Vineyard of Forest City, Engelbrecht Family Winery of Fredricksburg and Winneshiek Wildberry of Decorah.
St. Ansgar native Janice Christensen will perform. Commemorative wine glasses will be for sale. Sponsors of this event are Farmers State Bank, Kenison Construction, LM Pump Service, Larsen Plumbing & Heating, Northwood Electric, Northwood Lumber, Peterson Excavating, Spatial Designs and Spencer Movers and Universal Contractors.
This nonprofit organization is raising funds toward the restoration of the 1923 Barton No. two-room school. Once completed, the lower level will serve as a community center and location to host entertaining and cultural events. The upper level will display educational memorabilia spanning the years 1923-56 and a possible gift shop.
