WELLS — A house in this community was damaged by fire early this morning after it was reportedly struck by lightning during a severe thunderstorm.
Wells Fire Chief Mike Pyzick said the call of the fire came in at about 5:15 a.m. from a house at 411 Second Ave. S.W., owned by Pam Schull.
When firefighters arrived at the scene, there were flames coming out of the peak of the second-floor attic. Firefighters were at the house for about two hours, battling the fire in the rain.
Pyzick said the house is not a total loss, but there is “considerable” damage.
Schull, her daughter and another family friend were home at the time. No one was injured.
Damage was contained to the attic and the second floor, Pyzick said. He did not have a dollar estimate of the damage.
He noted while there was no sign of a definite entry from the lightning, this is not unusual. The State Fire Marshal’s Office will still conduct an investigation.
He said there was “quite a lightning storm and downpouring rains,” this morning in Wells.
The Wells Fire Department was assisted by the Wells Police and Wells Ambulance.
More rain is forecast for today and tonight. Wells is expected to get almost a half inch this evening.
