City awards street contracts

The Albert Lea City Council on Monday awarded contracts for two neighborhood improvement projects slated for this summer.

The first involves the bituminous mill, overlay and scattered curb and gutter replacement on various parts of street in the east central part of the city.

One bid for the project was submitted by Ulland Brothers of Albert Lea for about $462,000. The engineer’s estimate was about $489,000.

The second project involves mill, overlay and miscellaneous curb, gutter and sidewalk replacement for the following streets:

• Clark Street from Minnesota Highway 13 to First Avenue

• Southeast Marshall Street from Morningside Road to Prospect Avenue

• Prospect Avenue from U.S. Highway 65 to SE Marshall Street

New sidewalk will be installed on Clark Street from Highway 13 to South Sixth Avenue and the watermain will be replaced from East Main Street to Charlotte Avenue.

One bid from Ulland Brothers was submitted for the project for about $815,000.

The engineer’s estimate was $879,000.

 

In other action, the council:

• Approved a request from the Freeborn County Humane Society for almost $13,000 of unexpected excavating costs that occurred during the building of the addition to the shelter.

The building had been slated to be turned over to the city at the completion of the construction.

• Approved a request from Joseph Lee, owner of Aylwin’s Concessions, to sell concessions in city parks and at City Beach starting in May.

He is required to be licensed with the Department of Food Service and have a statewide electrical license to generate his own power. He will also be required to submit a certificate of liability insurance.

City Manager Chad Adams said Lee may also be subject to a background check.

• Renewed the city’s mutual aid agreement in the Freeborn County Fire Association.

• Approved May 5 for the annual lakes cleanup.

The cleanup will be in the channel area between Fountain Lake and Albert Lea Lake from 9 a.m. to noon.
