More than 117 bicyclists left from the Sibley Elementary School warming house 6 a.m. Saturday morning to start their 100-mile journey around Freeborn County.

The 40th annual Bike-A-Thon started in Albert Lea and traveled to Glenville, Myrtle, Hayward, Geneva, Hartland, Freeborn, Alden, Conger and then back to Albert Lea.

The event is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.

LeAnn Juveland, a woman stationed at the Sibley warming house, the start and finish point, said riders were expected to return anywhere from noon until around 6 p.m.

Juveland said there were many riders who planned to make the Glenville stop their finish line.

As of 8 a.m. Saturday, Alicia Ryan was listed on the American Cancer Society’s website as the top fundraiser with $2,940 raised. Other top fundraisers listed were Weston Hulst $668, Mariah McGill $150, and Donnie Schuster $110.

The pledges riders collected prior to the race will be collected at Wells Fargo Bank in Albert Lea on May 15 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Once the pledges have been sorted, prizes will be awarded on May 25 at Skyline mall for categories including most pledges raised, oldest and youngest riders and more.
