Editorial: Watch for motorcycles

It’s that time of year to keep an eye out for all the two-wheeled travelers on our roads.

Just like how on the day of the first decent snowfall people forget how to drive on slick roads, in the spring people forget to watch for motorcycles.

They have gone all winter looking for cars and trucks when they drive that, come spring, suddenly they are blind to two-wheeled travelers.

It’s not because the motorcycles are smaller. It is a type of cognitive error. People accustomed to watching for a specific item are less likely to see other items. In this case, drivers accustomed to watching for cars are less likely to notice a motorcycle.

We urge drivers to pay closer attention to our friends on two wheels and to keep an open mind when piloting a four-wheeled vehicle.
