NEW RICHLAND — A unique blessing will grace the town of New Richland on Sunday.

People of all faiths are invited to bring their furry friends of all species and sizes to the town’s first Blessing of the Animals.

“We’ll give a hands-on blessing for long life, good health and a happy home,” said the Rev. Paul Andree of Trinity Lutheran Church in New Richland.

The event was coordinated by the New Richland Ministerial Association and celebrates St. Francis of Assisi’s love for all creatures.

The reason behind planning the ceremony was simple. “People love their pets,” said Andree.

Andree will preside over the ceremony, which will include a worship service, songs and scripture leading up to the blessing.

Each pet will then be blessed individually by Andree.

Afterwards, each pet will receive a special Blessing of Animals card and a St. Francis of Assisi collar tag inscribed with “pray for us.” Treats for the animals and “people treats” will also be served.

In addition, the event will feature an “Ask the Vet” information station, a K-9 demonstration by the Steele County K-9 Unit and representatives from area animal organizations will be on hand to answer questions and hand out information.

No reservations are necessary. “We’re inviting people to bring their pets — dogs, cats, birds, fish, horses, guinea pigs, rabbits or any well-behaved pet,” Andree said.

This free event is Sunday from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the New Richland City Park, 215 South Broadway Ave., New Richland. In case of rain, the event will be moved to the American Legion building across the street from the park.
