AUSTIN — A high-speed chase that allegedly caused a Mower County sheriff’s deputy to crash into the back of the suspect’s car resulted in five criminal charges for a Grand Meadow man.

Josh Logan Mallory, 21, was charged Monday in Mower County District Court with fleeing an officer in a vehicle, a felony; driving while intoxicated and DWI with a combination of substances, both gross misdemeanors, misdemeanor open bottle and petty misdemeanor marijuana possession.

Deputy Ryan Norton activated his flashing lights when he saw Mallory going 25 in a 55 mph zone with no license plate light. Mallory allegedly accelerated, turned and went 80 mph down a gravel road and at one point spun out. The chase resulted in Norton going into a ditch, according to Sheriff Terese Amazi.

Mallory turned and shut off his lights while Norton was getting back on the road, Amazi added. After he resumed the chase, Norton ran into the back of Mallory’s car. Neither Norton nor Mallory were injured; both cars sustained minor damage. Mallory, who allegedly had several open bottles of hard liquor in the car and about 0.5 grams of marijuana, admitted he was drunk and had smoked marijuana an hour before the chase, according to the court complaint.

Mallory was placed in the Mower County jail on $3,000 bail with conditions. His next court appearance is set for May 31.
