The Southeastern Minnesota Chamber Orchestra begins its second full season with a concert on Sunday, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m. at First Lutheran Church of Albert Lea.
As has become its tradition, the orchestral first concert of the season is a classical one with works by such classical giants as Bach, Beethoven, Handel and Mozart. There will be an emphasis on Mozart at this concert with several selections being performed. Cathleen Arhelger, principle flutist for the orchestra, will be a soloist on Mozart’s “Concerto in D Major” and “Andante.”
Ms. Arhelger lives in Rochester where she has taught hundreds of young people to play the flute at her private studio: Cathy Arhelger Flute Studio which was established in 1981. She also played in the Rochester Symphony Orchestra from 1981 to 1989. In addition, she is part of a freelance duo with violin called Woodwind Duo that often plays for weddings and other special events.
Cathleen began playing the flute in the sixth grade band in the Detroit area. She received her bachelor’s degree in music from Wayne State University. Three-time winner of the Professional Flute Choir Competition of the National Flute Association, Ms. Arhelger performed in that group in New York City in 2009, Albuquerque in 2007 and Pittsburgh in 2006. She released her second solo album: “Rejoice! A Treasury of Christmas Carols for Flute and Piano” in 2007.
Tickets for the concert are available at the First Lutheran Church office, Doyle’s Hallmark, and from orchestra members. They will also be available between church services and at the door. Cost is $8 in advance and $10 at the door. Don’t miss this opportunity to support music in the Albert Lea community.
