Anyone who was late to the Glenville-Emmons girls’ basketball game Tuesday night against Lyle/Pacelli might as well had stayed home.

The Wolverines jumped all over the Athletics in the first 10 minutes courtesy of a 9-0 run to start the game and led by as much as 14 in the first half en route to a 43-29, wire-to-wire victory.

Glenville-Emmons junior Kalli VanRyswyk scored 14 of her game-high 20 points in the first half and was dominant on the interior.

“I think she’s got some big games ahead of her, too,” said Wolverines head coach Lisa Ziebell. “I knew tonight that she could come out big.”

The only thing that slowed the Wolverines seemed to be themselves. Glenville-Emmons (1-0) committed 21 turnovers which kept Lyle/Pacelli (0-1) close.

The Athletics made the game interesting with their full-court press and 3-point shooting. Lyle/Pacelli cut the lead to five at one point, but eventually the Wolverines beat the press and found quick layups in the second half.

Kailey Davis was one of the press breakers for Glenville-Emmons and she finished with eight points. Emily Belshan added seven points while Alayna Hall and Reina Saltou scored three points and Devin Cooper added two points.

“I’m very happy to start the season with a win,” Ziebell said. “The girls need that win for their confidence.”

The Wolverines head to Adams Thursday to face Southland in the Southland Rebel Classic.
