The Albert Lea American Legion baseball team won in extra innings Tuesday in Rochester in a game that was scoreless after 10 innings.

The Tigers defeated the A’s from Century High 3-2 in 11 innings.

Tyler Woodside was the winning pitcher, throwing for all 11 innings. He gave up four hits, three walks and struck out nine batters. He allowed just one earned run.

“And he pitched the masterpiece on his birthday!” added coach Jay Enderson.

Albert Lea’s Cole Sorenson led the top of the 11th with a hit. The A’s blew a pickoff play, moving Sorenson to third base. Tiger Connor Kortan walked, then stole second. Makael Lunning dropped down a bunt, scoring Sorenson and moving Kortan to third. Lunning reached first, then stole second. Houston Sharpe bunted, scoring Kortan and moving Lunning.

Lucas Hansen managed an infield hit to score Lunning for a 3-0 lead.

Woodside entered the 11th with about 115 pitches, Enderson said.

After getting one out, he gave up a one-out double, following by a single that scored the only earned run off Woodside. A fielder’s choice moved the runner to third. An error by the Tigers resulted in the second run.

The Legion team now has a 3-3 record and is 2-2 in conference action.

The team plays the Rochester Patriots (John Marshall High) at 5 p.m. Friday at Hayek Field.
