The community is invited to a new event held by Albert Lea’s Beyond the Yellow Ribbon group.
The all-day event, called the Freedom Festival and, will be next Saturday. It is for any member of the military, their family and the community. The group’s chairman, John Severtson, said they wanted to have a family-friendly event.
“We wanted a way for the community to be able to thank all the veterans,” Severtson said. “We hope everyone comes out to have fun and thank veterans for their service.”
The day will kick off with entertainment by the Alley Katz band from 12:30 to 3 p.m., then Christian rock band, Sent, will perform from 3 to 6 p.m. Bad Monkey will end the night and play from 6 to 9 p.m. All concerts are at the Bandshell.
Also for adults is a bean bag tournament starting with walk-in registration at 12:30 p.m. and tournament start time at 1:30 p.m. It’s best of three with double elimination. People interested can pre-register by calling The Pour House at 256-8014. The tournament is limited to 20 teams, with prizes for the top three.
For children there will be face painting and many activities. The National Guard is bringing in a rock-climbing wall, obstacle course and other activities for kids.
Hot dogs will be provided to guests, courtesy of Cargill. Geneva Bar & Grill will bartend out of the Cottage at the park.
“It’s great how many businesses have stepped up to help us with our event,” Severtson said.
For veterans of all ages there will be informational booths in the afternoon to explain different military benefits and other services available to veterans.
