Hollandale voters to decide on Sunday liquor

Voters in Hollandale will decide today whether Sunday liquor sales will be permitted in the town’s only restaurant.

“We have a restaurant and bar in town that would like the opportunity to be open on Sundays and serve drinks along with its food,” said Hollandale Mayor Ted Radke.

The Hollandale 3-in-1, 101 W. Park St., opened a little over a year ago and serves as the town’s only restaurant, bar and gas station.

Owners Dale and Shelli Miller approached the Hollandale City Council in July about getting a question put on the ballot for the general election, allowing voters the opportunity to vote yes or no to the measure.

“We were going to put it on the ballot last year, but that costs too much for the special ballots,” said Dale.

Miller said the restaurant and bar is generally open Mondays through Saturdays. If the measure passes, it does not mean that the restaurant and bar will be open every Sunday. It would simply allow the owners to serve alcohol on the Sundays they choose to be open.

“There probably aren’t over 12 occasions a year we would be open on Sundays,” said Miller. “This would be for special events, sporting events, Vikings games and brunch-type events.”

According to Radke, if the measure is passed by a majority yes vote, then the City Council will issue the Hollandale 3-in-1 an on-premise license only, meaning that liquor could only be served inside the establishment on Sundays. Patrons could not carry liquor off the premise.

“I haven’t heard any negative comments,” said Radke. “In a community as small as we are, going without a restaurant and gas station as long as we did, people seem pretty receptive to it.”
