50 years ago – 1960
Statistics for the 1960 Albert Lea High School football team included the following; scoring — Dave Palmer 48 points, Steve Claybourn 43, Paul Wilke 36, Dick Oliphant 35, Gary Jacobsen 19, Ted Larson six and Jim Larson one. Rushing — Steve Claybourn 622 yards and 5.27 average per carry, Dave Palmer 588 yards and 6.46 average, Paul Wilke 587 yards and 6.46 average. Receiving — Gary Jacobsen 13 catches for 282 yards and Paul Wilke four catches for 25 yards.
Named to the 1960 Border League All-Star Football Team were the following: Kiester – Darryl Meyer, Lowell Meyer, Bob Seljeseth, Cliff Snyder and Leon Walcholz; Elmore – Eldean Ihle, Shurdean Ristau, Darris Mulkin, Mike Walton and Allan Krosch; Freeborn – Allan Beach, Fritz Kendrick, Harold Pierce and Bob Dinneen; Alden – Albert Allan, Gary Schoenrock, Howard Jacobs and Dennis Brayland; Bricelyn – Chuck Anderson and Douglas Lura; Emmons – James Honsey; Delavan – Larry Claude.
25 years ago – 1985
In the opening round of the Class C football state tournament, New Richland-Hartland defeated New Ulm Cathedral 16-13. Brian Nelson and Mark Boelter scored touchdowns for NR-H.
Sarah Hareid of Albert Lea High School placed second at the section meet and qualified for the state tournament in diving.
The Alden-Conger girls volleyball team defeated St. Charles 3-1 in the semi-final round and then defeated Kenyon 3-1 to win Region 1A title and advanced to the state tournament.
10 years ago – 2000
Paul Pierson of Albert Lea shot a hole-in-one on the 13th hole with an eight iron at Green Lea.
Senior Eric Beck of Alden-Conger running with the Albert Lea team placed fifth in Class AA at the Minnesota state cross country meet.
The Minnesota Vikings defeated the Arizona Cardinals 31-14. Robert Smith gained 117 yards in 20 carries and quarterback Daunte Culpepper completed 25-of-32 passes for 302 yards for the Vikings.
