Six Albert Lea High School students attended the national scholastic journalism convention in Kansas City, Mo. The convention was Nov. 11-14. The students and adviser Riley Worth traveled by bus with about 80 students and advisers from all over Minnesota. It was a successful weekend as they all learned a lot and won five awards.

I-Mag, the student literary magazine, earned fourth place in its Best of Show contest. Editors responsible for putting that together were 2009 graduates Jill Jensen and Janet Lawler. It featured art, photography, poetry and short stories submitted by ALHS students and was distributed last spring in connection with the annual Coffeehouse Festival. Meanwhile, Ahlahasa, the student newspaper, is in the midst of a redesign, headed up by editors Nya Lony and Ashlyn Freitag. Despite being in the middle of that process, the newspaper placed in the top 10 in two contests. Its November special section on Race in School finished seventh in Best of Show and the newspaper as a whole placed tenth.

Also, newspaper team member Anissa Nelson, junior, earned an excellent rating for in an individual editorial cartoon contest. It was her first time drawing an editorial cartoon, but she picked it up quickly. Tiger Yearbook team member Amber Bergland, junior, earned an honorable mention rating in a newswriting contest.
