Albert Lea High School junior baseball players Ethan Abben and Makael Lunning were named the Tribune’s Co-Players of the Year.

According to Tigers coach Joe Sczublewski Abben led the Big Nine Conference in batting and stolen bases for the 2011-12 season.

“He’s very versatile,” Sczublewski said. “He can play most spots in the field, but he mostly played shortstop this year.”

Abben was also named All-Conference and was a captain for the Tigers.

He had 61 at bats, 27 hits, 19 runs, 13 RBIs and six doubles for the season.

Lunning, also a captain for the Tigers and named All-Conference, mostly played center field.

Sczublewski noted his power in throwing and batting.

“In a game against Mayo he had two grand slam home runs for us,” Sczublewski said. “ We look forward to a huge season from him next year.”

Lunning had 65 at bats, 25 hits, 12 runs, 23 RBIs, six doubles, one triple and five home runs for the Tigers.

Both Abben and Lunning are three-sport athletes at ALHS.
