Scholarship winner plans to care for Alaskan natives

The American Medical Association Foundation awarded the Arthur N. Wilson Scholarship to E. Sophie Spencer, who grew up in Juneau, Alaska.

Spencer graduated from Juneau Douglas High School in 2003, from Dartmouth College in 2007 and now attends the University of Washington School of Medicine.

She was pleased to receive the $5,000 scholarship, which is awarded to a medical student who graduated from a high school in southeast Alaska.

After completing her residency, she plans to return to Alaska to work with the Native Corporation or Indian Health Services.

As an intern, Spencer provided health care to Cambodian children and landmine victims.

Spencer is the daughter of Carola Thompson and Larry Spencer of Juneau and the granddaughter of William and Doryce Thompson of Albert Lea.
