MINNEAPOLIS — Minnesota sophomore offensive lineman Jimmy Gjere has decided to end his football career due to the recurrence of concussion-like symptoms.
The university announced Gjere’s decision on Monday.
Gjere was an Associated Press first team all-state selection in 2009 for Irondale High school in the Minneapolis suburb of New Brighton. The 6-foot-7, 325-pound Gjere was one of the pillars of the 2010 recruiting class, and he redshirted his first year with the Gophers.
Last season, Gjere started the first five games at right tackle until suffering the head injury at Michigan on Oct. 1. He was bothered by dizziness throughout the rest of the fall and didn’t play again, but he was cleared for full activity this summer and in competing for the starting spot again until the symptoms returned.
