The 2012 Farming of Yesteryear “Old-Time Threshing Show” will be held on Sept. 8 and 9 in rural Kiester. The nonprofit Gopher-Hawkeye Power Association hosts this event that preserves the past for generations of the future.
This show has been a favorite for area folk but it also brings visitors from miles away who come to see the past come to life with working demonstrations of threshing, blacksmithing and sawmill operations. They get an up-close look at the equipment our ancestors used to plant and harvest crops along with a real taste and feel for life on the farm in the olden days.
There will also be free tours of the old-time farmhouse, authentic country schoolhouse or church. There will be a daily parade of tractors and free homemade soup at 5 p.m. on Sept. 8.
Antique and restored tractors and equipment sit on display for all to see, and there’s even an opportunity to purchase raffle tickets to win a real antique tractor.
Show admission tickets are $6 for adults, with children (ages 12 and under) allowed free admission. Keepsake collector show buttons are included with each admission. Primitive camping is also available at the show site located at 1736 600th Ave., Kiester, MN 56051. For more information, contact Warren Oldfather at 507-525-1828.
The event sponsors also welcome yearly memberships to their organization ($10 for single or $15 for couples). Dues help pay the liability insurance and electricity used at the farm site. There are also support memberships (single support for $25 or double support for $35) if people are unable to help with the events but want to assist them in continuing their worthwhile efforts. Numerous fundraising events are held throughout the year to keep the annual show running for visitors.
