LAKE MILLS — The Bulldogs’ football team played West Fork at home on Friday for the first game of the season.

The Warhawks’ Spencer Halloran proved to be too much for the Bulldogs as they fell 38-22.

“Spencer is an extremely, extremely talented quarterback,” said Lake Mills’ head coach Bill Byrnes. “He was almost a one-man wrecking crew.”

Halloran was 26-213 in rushing and 13-21-157 in passing. He scored four touchdowns and had the Warhawks’ lone interception.

The Warhawks put the only points of the first quarter on the board after scoring on a 44-yard run by Halloran. The kick for the extra point was no good.

Starting the second quarter down 6-0, Bulldog Paul Pins caught a 36-yard pass from Hunter Kingland to tie the score, and Byron McDougall kicked the extra point. With less than two minutes remaining, Halloran made a 17-yard pass to Jordan Griemann for another touchdown, and ran in two extra points for West Fork.

Brynes said the play was the turning point in the game.

“It hurt our momentum. It hurt the game.”

Lake Mills’ Nathan Banwart scored the second touchdown on a 1-yard run in the third quarter and Pins scored the final touchdown in the fourth after a 2-yard pass from Kingland to close out the game 16 points short.

Byrnes said the team is obviously disappointed in the loss, but there was a lot of positives in the game play.

“We’re much more improved from a year ago,” Brynes said. “We just have to clean up our mistakes, learn from it and hopefully be better next Friday night.”

The Bulldogs’ game will be on the road at Central Springs and is set to begin at 7 p.m.
