The Freeborn County Attorney’s Office filed a delinquency petition Monday against a 13-year-old boy who allegedly stabbed his mother west of Lerdal.
The teenager, whose name has not been released, has been in custody in the Anoka County Juvenile Detention Center since the alleged incident Friday.
He appeared Monday during a closed juvenile hearing in Freeborn County District Court.
Because of the teenager’s age, neither the Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office or the County Attorney’s Office has released any information that might identify him.
Assistant Freeborn County Attorney Erin O’Brien said juvenile names and information about alleged crimes can be released for 16- or 17-year-olds who are charged with felonies.
Otherwise, a child has to be 14 for a judge to consider certifying a juvenile as an adult, O’Brien said. Because this teenager was only 13 at the time of the alleged crime, this rule does not apply.
According to the Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office, the stabbing reportedly took place at 29225 255th St. in Riceland Township.
Deputies were alerted to the incident after the boy’s mother reportedly called dispatchers, telling them she had been stabbed by her son and was driving herself to the emergency room at Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea.
Deputies arrested the teenager at the house on the front porch. They confiscated two knives and a shotgun.
Authorities have not released any information on the type of knife allegedly used.
