Carlson helps lead Albert Lea past Sioux Falls

ROCHESTER- Eric Carlson recorded a hat trick with three goals as the Albert Lea Tigers boys’ hockey team defeated the Sioux Falls Flyers 5-4 Wednesday at the Kiwanis Hockey Festival in Rochester.
All five of Albert Lea’s goals were scored in the second period.
After a scoreless first period, the Flyers got on the board 20 seconds into the second period with a goal by Nick Bierschbach to take a 1-0 lead.
Seven minutes later, it was the Flyers again as Steven Miller scored to give Sioux Falls a 2-0 lead.
Albert Lea got on the board minutes later with a power play goal from Dillion Stolt to cut the lead down to 2-1.
Less than a minute later, Albert Lea tied the game at two goals apiece with a Luke Cheever goal.
Albert Lea then took the lead at the 12:15 mark in the second period when Eric Carlson recorded a short handed goal to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead.
Three minutes later it was Carlson again beating the Flyers goalie at the 15:39 to give Albert Lea a 4-2 lead.
At the 16:57 mark, Carlson netted the hat trick with another power play goal to give Albert Lea a 5-3 lead.
In the third period, the Flyers cut the lead to one as Brandon Appeldorn scored a power play goal but it wasn’t enough as the Tigers earned the 5-4 win.
Albert Lea out shot Sioux Falls 39-13 in the game.
With the win, Albert Lea will play again Thursday at 4:15 p.m. in the Consolation championship.
