50 years ago – 1962

• Hayward Lutheran defeated Methodist 20-7 in a church league American division softball game. Winning pitcher Jerry Schewe had three hits, two walks and scored four runs.

• The Wells High School football team won its 17th straight game over three seasons when they defeated Blue Earth 26-0. David Stussy scored two touchdowns, Chuck Schultz and Al Redman had one each for the Wildcats.

• Dick Davies of Albert Lea defeated John Eyman of Forest City, Iowa, 5-4 to win the 34th annual Shortstop Golf Tournament.

• Don Grasso, head football coach at Glenville High School, greeted nine returning letter winners. They were Gerald Pratner, Lloyd Lee, Russ Brabec, Mike Ferguson, Dick Offenhauser, Dave Hanson, Larry Pratner, Doug Cipra and Tom Struck.

• The Minnesota Twins swept a doubleheader from Washington by scores of 9-3 and 4-3. Camilo Pasqual won his 17th game in game No. 1. Ruben Gomez pitched a complete game for the Twins in the second game. Twins outfielder Bob Allison homered in each game.

 

25 years ago – 1987

• Albert Lea’s Liquor Depot women’s slowpitch softball team played in a national slowpitch tournament. Team members were Nancy Bellrichard, Tracie White, Jeren Porter, Lisa White, Jackie Williamson, Linda Roberts, Leann Roberts, Linda Godtland, Julie Meyer, Sue Becker, Ann Murphy and Cheryl Page.

• Minnesota native Paul Moliter of the Milwaukee Brewers baseball team ended his 39-game hitting streak with an 0-4 game against the Cleveland Indians.

 

10 years ago – 2002

• The Albert Lea High School boys’ soccer team opened its season with a 4-1 victory over Winona Cotter. Scoring goals for the Tigers were Jake Clark, two, and Jeremy Jacobson and Nate Lombardi had one goal each.

• The ALHS girls’ volleyball team opened its season with a 3-0 sweep over Southland by scores of 15-7, 15-1 and 15-6. Whitney Sorenson had seven kills, six service aces and four blocks for Albert Lea.
