Here are highlights in history for Dec. 31, gleaned from the files of the Albert Lea Tribune:
1993 — One of the year’s top local news events selected by the Tribune’s staff was based on Francis Carrington of California purchasing the Northbridge Mall.
1983 — Really cold temperatures caused water pipes to freeze, then burst and cause damages at Wallace’s Department Store, Pamida North and at Info Pro, 110 W. Pearl St.
1973 — U.S. Second District Representative Ancher Nelson, 69, said he would not be a candidate for a ninth term in Congress.
