Thank your local representatives

You may have taken the time this holiday season to thank your mail carrier, your children’s teachers, your day care provider and your hair dresser, but have you thanked your local representatives?
The political season has come to an end and the new legislative sessions will be starting shortly, which means it’s time for the officials we elected to get to work. For those who ran and weren’t elected or those who served and chose to not run again, it means their time of public service has come to an end (at least for now).
But whether public service is their career or they’re doing it for the benefit of their community or school district, whether their political career is just beginning or ending, they are and were there to serve you, your family and your neighbors. Let them know they are appreciated.
Minnesota State Senator Dan Sparks, representing District 27, has served since 2003 and Representative Jean Poppe of District 27A has served since 2005. Representative Robin Brown of District 27B began her first term in 2007, and Rich Murray will take over that role starting next week. On Monday, they found out what committees they will serve on for this legislative session. While you may not agree with them on all issues or even have voted for them, staying in contact with your elected officials is part of the political process.
In Albert Lea and Freeborn County, Vern Rasmussen has taken over for Mike Murtaugh as mayor, and Bob Kindler takes over for Mark Harig as sheriff. These are new roles for both and encouragement never hurts.
On the Albert Lea school board Mark Ciota will take over for Jolinda Schreiber on Monday evening.
You may be surprised how far a “thank you” goes.
