In a season already marked with achievement, the Glenville-Emmons football team added another milestone to the season Wednesday with a 22-20 upset victory over Mabel-Canton in Glenville.

The Wolverines (3-4, 3-4 SEC) snapped a four-game losing streak against the Cougars (4-3, 4-3 SEC), a team that ranked eighth in the state for much of the season.

The Glenville-Emmons defense, like it did much of the game, held Mabel-Canton on its final drive of the game when a pass to the end zone of fourth-and-goal from the 7-yard line with 1 minute, 40 seconds to play in the game fell incomplete.

“The kids came around,” said Wolverines head coach Derek Nelson. “They dug deep this game. They knew it was within their reach and they didn’t back down.”

Zack Williamson threw for two touchdowns and Michael Thofson ran for another in the Glenville-Emmons victory.

Thofson started the game with a 51-yard touchdown run to give the Wolverines an 8-0 lead after a two-point conversion.

The Cougars tied the game when Jesse Amdahl scored from 4 yards out.

In the second quarter with time running out in the first half, Nelson decided to throw the ball. With two wide receivers spread to each side, Williamson found Perry Kirsch across the middle for a 53-yard gain that set up a touchdown.

Two plays later Williamson scrambled to find Kirsch, who finished with five catches and 96 yards, open in the back of the end zone for a 2-yard touchdown reception that gave the Wolverines a 14-8 lead.

Thofson, who finished with 154 yards rushing, and the Glenville-Emmons offense didn’t waste much time extending that lead in the third quarter. On the team’s first possession Thofson sprinted down the far sideline for a 55-yard run to bring the ball to the Mabel-Canton 25-yard line.

Landon Hall ran for 19 yards on the next play to set up a first-and-goal. Then on fourth-and-goal, Williamson scrambled again and found Jon Mittag for a 6-yard touchdown reception. Williamson scored on the two-point conversion and the Wolverines had a 22-20 lead.

The Cougars came back with an efficient running game that rattled off 4-to-5-yards at a time, but it was Glenville-Emmons that came up with the final stop.

“We kept pushing and fighting and pulled it out,” said Wolverines senior Derek Sanderson.
