The Montessori Children’s House of Albert Lea received some roof damage on Dec. 31. Because it was winter break no children were present when the damage occured.
Meg Ehrhardt, who manages the property with her father, George, said two trusses are broken, and the damage is not major.
“There’s still a ceiling,” Ehrhardt said. “The roof trusses had started to give way.”
Ehrhardt said that even though snow was shoveled off the roof before the trusses broke, there was too much weight from ice and water on the roof.
School was canceled Monday and Tuesday, but opened again Wednesday. Ehrhardt said the classrooms were moved to a different area of the building and to another building close by.
Ehrhardt said structural engineers and a city inspector have surveyed the damage. She expects the roof will have to be replaced.
The Montessori school is located on West Main Street in Albert Lea. It provides early childhood education for about 45 children.
