The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 56 of Albert Lea held their meeting at 7 p.m. Sept. 5 in the Legion dining room. The chaplain Jenny Torgerson led us in prayer, a moment of silence in memory of our dead (“Taps” played). Pledge of Allegiance was recited and one stanza of the national anthem was sung. The Preamble to the American Legion Auxiliary was read by everyone.
Secretary Vonnie Oftedahl read the secretary minutes of the June meeting. Treasurer Rita Andersen gave her report. Both were approved.
The speaker was American Legion Post Commander Roger Bakken. He informed the group of changes and improvements at the club and of future activities to keep the club open. Question and answer time was then held.
Joyce Olson, who attended the 94th Department Convention at Jackpot Junction, was presented with a cash award for Unit 56 Auxiliary for Poppy Centerpiece that was made by Sharon Andersen.
Children and Youth Chairwoman Karen Cibert asked that the group continue saving pop tabs, box tops for education and soup UPC labels. It was also announced to bring in soap, lotions and shampoos from hotels for the Veterans Administration hospital. Canceled postage stamps (commemorative and foreign only) and picture post cards (do not cut the stamps off) are also being collected.
A recommendation was made by the executive board to hold only four meetings per year, which would be held in September, November, April and June. A motion was made, seconded and approved by majority vote. Any recommendations would be voted on at these meetings and monies sent when due by the treasurer.
The following donations were voted on and approved: $300 to Veterans Administration gift shop, $300 to $5 Bill Shower, $50 to Forgotten Children and $50 to Operation Military Kids.
The fundraiser pancake breakfast for the Auxiliary will be held from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sept. 30 at the Legion Club. The auxiliary thanks those who come to support its programs.
The chaplain led the group in prayer, and one verse of “God Bless America” was sung. The meeting was adjourned.
