Albert Leans will get a glimpse Sunday of something that floats on water and is fast.

The Upper Midwest Powerboat Association will make its first appearance in the area at Edgewater Park. The event is slated for 1 p.m. Organizers have been trying to get this event going since last February, and it is finally here.

The UMPBA is an organization that was started around 10 years ago by a group of boaters that wanted to put on a formal event and it ended up becoming a nonprofit racing club. Now the group puts on informal events and focuses on making them fun for everyone.

Scott Kalash, with the UMPBA, is anticipating around a dozen of the upper level boats to participate. The upper level boats, or blown alcohol hydros, are expected to hit more than 100 mph in the 1,000-foot drag race, while the lower classes, which can consist of fishing boats, will be well under the 100 mph mark.

Kalash wanted to make it very clear that any and all are welcome to participate in the event, whether it be with a fishing boat, a ski boat, or a speedboat. He also wanted to encourage the community to stop out and see the action. This will be the first time that they have ever had an event on a Sunday and they are hoping for a big turn out.

The UMPBA’s headquarters and registration will be at the new Edgewater Bay Pavillion.

Registration will be at 8 a.m. Sunday morning with practice set for around 10 a.m.

According to UMPBA’s website, the Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office does not allow testing before 10 a.m. so the organizers ask that drivers obey the rule.
