Last year’s North Iowa Conference tournament ended in disappointment for the Lake Mills volleyball team as it saw its 62-match winning streak against conference opponents snapped by Osage in the conference tournament finals.
This year the Bulldogs returned just one starter from last year’s group, but Lake Mills was ready for some revenge.
The 12th-ranked Bulldogs (30-3) went 2-0 Monday in West Hancock to claim the conference tournament title for the sixth time in seven years.
Lake Mills got a rematch with Osage, a team that took the Bulldogs to five sets early this season, and promptly dismissed the Green Devils in three sets 26-24, 25-18, 25-10.
“We wanted to kind of get a little revenge from last year,” said Lake Mills head coach Jim Boehmer.
Amanda Lampman put down 11 kills and Darcy Nelson added 10 in the win. Nelson also had five blocks.
Lindy Pins had 13 digs and freshman Morgan Fjelstad had 35 assists.
The Bulldogs reached the finals after a 3-0 win over Forest City.
Lake Mills took a quick 1-0 lead with a 25-19 victory, but fought off the Indians in the second set 25-23, before putting them away for good with a 25-18 third-set win.
Nelson had seven kills and Josie Brackey added six and Lampman had 16 digs.
“We really feel good about where we’re at,” Boehmer said. “We’re getting contributions from everyone every night. Everyone is improving at their position.”
Since starting the season 5-2, the Bulldogs have gone 25-1 with their only loss coming to Algona, the third-ranked team in Class 3A. Lake Mills has gotten it done with balance and depth this season.
“We didn’t start the year with any depth, but we’ve been able to build it and develop it,” Boehmer said.
The Bulldogs are off until next Tuesday when they travel to Manly to face Central Springs, the same team who they open the regional playoffs against.
