14-0 Wolverines outlast Vikings 49-40

NORTHWOOD, Iowa — The Glenville-Emmons Wolverines boys’ basketball team outscored the Northwood-Kensett Vikings 16-2 in the third quarter Thursday as the Wolverines defeated the Vikings 49-40 in Northwood.
“They came ready to play,” Wolverines head coach Dan Fredrickson said. “I knew they were going to give us a fight and they did.”
The Vikings came out ready to play right away in the first quarter as Dylan Nitcher hit a jumper early on to give Northwood-Kensett an 8-3 lead.
The Vikings’ Tyler Thofson scored eight points in the first quarter as Northwood-Kensett held a 16-11 lead over the Wolverines.
In the second, the Wolverines used an early 8-0 run to take a 19-16 lead with 4 minutes and 45 seconds left in the quarter.
The Vikings fought back as they ended the first half on a Brady Cotter 3-pointer that gave Northwood-Kensett a 27-26 halftime lead.
“Defensively, it was our best game,” Vikings head coach Marty Cotter said. “I think we have gotten better defensively all year. Glenville-Emmons had a high powered offense and it was good to hold them to 26 points in that first half.”
In the third quarter, it was all Wolverines.
Glenville-Emmons opened the quarter on a 7-2 run that saw them take a 33-29 lead.
The Wolverines then rattled off nine-straight points, which included a Landon Hall 3-pointer as the horn soundeds to give Glenville-Emmons a 42-29 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Glenville-Emmon’s Wyatt Madsen scored four straight points to give the Wolverines a 45-29 lead.
The Vikings got back into the game as they went on an 11-2 run that ended with a Nik Werner layup that cut the Wolverines lead down to seven at 47-40.
The Wolverines then answered as Wyatt Madsen scored a layup with under a minute to go to give Glenville-Emmons a 49-40 victory.
Andrew Lau led the Wolverines with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
Madsen scored 11 points, while Tyler Woodside and Hall each scored 10 points.
