Here are highlights in history for Jan. 31, gleaned from the files of the Albert Lea Tribune:

1987 — American Legion National Commander James R. Dean would be visiting Albert Lea’s Leo Carey Post 56 on Feb. 3.

1977 — Albert Lea firemen responded to four separate fire calls. Albert Lea Township firemen handled a fifth blaze while the city crew was fully involved with a major fire.

1917 — All railroad traffic in the Albert Lea area ceased as a result of a blizzard. One M.&St.L. train was stalled in a drift near Emmons for nearly five hours.
