The girls’ team placed fifth overall in the 20-team meet.

“The girls and I were a little disappointed with how the meet went,” Rebels coach Kent Viesselman said. “But, with with Bethany and Beth both missing a lot of valuable practice time due to their injuries, it was the best we could expect. I just keep coming back to what could have been if everyone had been healthy all season.”

The boys finished sixth overall, a three-spot improvement from last year.

They were led by Brian Remington who finished 23rd out of 125 runners.

“I was pleased with the boys’ performance and placing,” Viesselman said. “They’ve made steady progress this season through hard work. I was happy to see our top four runners finishin within 41 seconds of each other.”

He added that the boys’ team has made “serious progress” to getting USC back to where it wants to be.

“A lot of that progress is due to our two seniors Eric Redman and Brett Stevermer,” Viesselman said. “They’ve really stepped forward this year and assumed a leadership role.”

Mantor and Goemann will run in the state meet 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Olaf College.
