50 years ago – 1962
• John Goodmanson scored 22 points and Dan Hanson had 16 for Albert Lea High School boys’ basketball in its 62-49 win over St. Paul Humdoldt.
• In first round games in the Albert Lea invitational basketball tournament, Wells High School defeated Staples 67-48 and North St. Paul defeated ALHS 55-49 in overtime. Wells was led by Al Redman with 19 points, and Gary Feist, Dave Stussy and Chuck Schultz had 10 points each. The Wildcats raised their season record to 6-1. Goodmanson had 19 points and Dan Hanson had 10.
25 years ago – 1987
• The ALHS boys’ basketball defeated Duluth East 85-70. Al Christopherson and Matt Sullivan led the Tigers scoring with two points each.
• Named to the Associated Press All-Pro First Team from the Minnesota Vikings were Joey Browner (safety) and Gary Zimmerman (tackle). Vikings named to the second team were Chris Doleman (end) and Keith Millard (tackle).
• Kim Zurcher scored 24 points to lead the Minnesota Gophers womens’ basketball team to an 89-65 win over Marquette for its third straight win.
• The ALHS boys’ hockey team tied with St. Paul Cretin-Derham Hall 4-4 in overtime. John Savelkoul scored two goals. The Tigers’ season record fell to 4-0-1.
10 years ago – 2002
• The Glenville-Emmons girls’ basketball team defeated Mabel-Canton 35-28 and raised its Southeast Conference record to 4-1. Sara Greibrok scored 10 points and Alisa Rayman had 11 rebounds for G-E.
• The United South Central girls’ basketball team raised its season record to 6-2 after defeating Nicollet 50-44. Andrea Eilertson scored 18 points and had 11 rebounds and Shannon Schroeder added 11 points for USC.
• In a basketball game at Target Center the ALHS boys’ defeated LaCrescent 47-45. Thomas Munden scored 13 points and Mike Behrends 12 for the Tigers.
• The Lake Mills boys’ basketball team defeated Belmond-Klemme 81-44 and improved to 3-1 in the North Iowa Conference. Jeremi Throne scored 22 points, Brad Rogstad 14 and Derek Richards 11 for the Lake Mills.
