NEW RICHLAND — Tyler Logan was down four points after the first period in his 145-pound match Friday. Being behind didn’t deter him from pinning his St. Clair/Loyola opponent 2:44 into the match, even if he’s not exactly sure how he did it.

“I don’t really remember it,” said Logan, the New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva junior. “I was losing, and I don’t know, I just caught him in a cradle.”

Cordell Peterson, a freshman at New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva, prepares Friday to pin down his opponent from St. Clair/Loyola. Peterson won both his 106- weight class matches Friday.

Logan’s efforts gave his team a 36-3 lead on its way to a 66-14 win over St. Clair/Loyola in the final dual of the NRHEG Panther Wrestling Invitational. NRHEG lost 42-21 to Blue Earth Area earlier in the evening.

Perhaps the Panthers had to shake off a little rust during the first dual.

“We just showed the effects of not having competed for three weeks,” said NRHEG head coach Paul Cyr. “We were a little more aggressive in the second match.”

The team hadn’t seen competitive action since the Redwood Riot Dec. 15 in Redwood Falls.

The little guys, as Cyr called them, got NRHEG started on the right foot against Blue Earth. Freshman Cordell Peterson had a pin just 24 seconds before the end of the third period in his 106-pound match. Add a pin by sophomore Dillon Kubiatowicz in the next match at the 113-pound level, and the Panthers jumped to a 12-0 lead. Then Blue Earth put up 39 unanswered points. They were just better Friday night, Cyr said.

But the Panthers are a young team, and the inexperience shows, their coach said. The three seniors it boasts were not starters last season. The number of graduating seniors from last year’s team was in the double digits, leaving it to some of the younger guys to step in and fill the voids.

“There’s just some places where we’re not as good as we need to be right now,” Cyr said.

Tyler Logan steadies himself on the mat Friday as he's being held by Blue Earth Area wrestler Jesse Alleuen. NRHEG lost the dual 42-21.

Peterson is certainly making his case to be good where he needs to be. He won both his matches Friday night, each victory coming with a pin. His performance has been consistent.

“He’s wrestled well for us,” Cyr said. “He’s been a real nice addition to our lineup.”

Not only did Peterson and Logan win by falls in the St. Clair/Loyola match, so did sophomore Keith Maxon in the 195-pound match and sophomore Todd Erickson in the 220-pound match. A lot of the points for NRHEG also came from forfeits by St. Clair/Loyola.

Next up for NRHEG is the Stewartville Invitational at 10 a.m. Jan. 12.
