Quick starters

United South Central equaled last year’s win total Friday with a 21-13 win over Martin County West Friday in Wells.

The Rebels (2-1, 1-1 Gopher Valley AA) got it done with a balanced attack that saw the team pass for 171 yards and rush for 118 against the Maverick. The key for USC has been the play of the offensive line, said head coach Brad Huse.

With four returners on the line and a three-year starter at quarterback things are picking up for the Rebels, who haven’t won more than two regular season games in five years.

“The seniors put in a lot of time and it’s starting to show,” Huse said.

Riley Swearingen was 10-for-17 with 171 yards passing and scored two touchdowns, one through the air and one on the ground.

Swearingen led the Rebels to their first score of the game with a 5-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.

Martin County West responded on the next possession when Alex Schliessmann broke free for a 45-yard touchdown run.

USC needed just two plays on its next possession to regain the lead when Swearingen found Zach Wigern open for a 31-yard touchdown that gave the Rebels a 14-7 lead after A.J. Dreyer’s extra point.

Tyson Morton added the final USC touchdown in the third quarter when he scored from 2 yards out to put the Rebels up 21-14 after Dreyer’s extra point.

The Mavericks tallied one final touchdown as time expired in the fourth quarter to make it a 21-13 game.

Taylor Ovrebo recorded eight tackles and one fumble recovery on defense.

The Rebels face Lake Crystal-Wellcome-Memorial next Friday and stand a good chance to move to 3-1 on the season. The Knights lost 22-7 to New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva to remain winless on the season.
