AUSTIN — As a result of track upgrades, the Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern Railroad will increase maximum train operating speed from 10 mph to 25 mph north of Austin. The change will be effective Feb. 8.
This change in regulated track speed on the Austin tracks includes the corridor over the 540th Avenue crossing north of the city, extends over U.S. 218, and through the 43rd Street Northwest crossing.
DM&E officials said the measure will improve the public traffic flow at railroad grade crossings.
The DM&E is a subsidiary of the Canadian Pacific Railway. The railroad has another set of tracks that run west from Austin through Oakland, Hayward, Albert Lea, Alden and Wells. The subsidiary also runs tracks under the name Iowa, Central & Eastern Railroad.
