50 years ago – 1963
• Lewis Kennedy, a 1960 graduate of Albert Lea High School, had a 7-2 record at 137 pounds for the Minnesota Gophers wrestling team.
• Northwood-Kensett defeated Lake Mills 64-61 in a North Iowa Conference basketball game. Rod Lundgren scored 14 points for the Vikings, and Warren Moe led all scorers with 21 points for the Bulldogs.
• Keister defeated Emmons 71-63 in a Border League basketball game. Bruce Trytten scored 22 points and Larry Johnson, 19, for Keister.
25 years ago – 1988
• The ALHS boys hockey team defeated Rochester John Marshall, the third-ranked team in Class AA, 5-4. Scoring goals for the Tigers were Steve Nelson, 2, Bucky Christensen, Dan Lee and Mats Fingahl.
• In their second game of the week, the ALHS hockey team defeated Owatonna 4-3. Mats Fingahl, Steve Nelson, Chad Adams and David Nystrom scored for the Tigers. The Tigers Big Nine Conference record was 7-2 and their season mark stood at 13-3-1.
• The ALHS girls’ basketball team defeated Austin 59-43 and raised their season record to 5-9. Julie Coughlin scored 25 points and Joni Wright, 17, for Albert Lea.
• Named to the Pro Football Hall of Fame were Alan Page (tackle) of the Minnesota Vikings, Mike Ditka (tight end) of the Chicago Bears, Fred Biletnikoff (wide receiver) of the Oakland Raiders and Jack Ham (linebacker) of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
10 years ago – 2003
• In the opening round of Section 1A girls’ hockey, goalie Danika Porter of the ALHS team recorded her sixth shutout of the year in the Tigers’ 7-0 win over Marshall. Scoring for Albert Lea were Marissa Cottrel, 2, Amy Leach, Tessa Christensen, Laura Hillman, Brittany Arendt and Heather Bagley.
• The ALHS girls’ hockey team defeated St. Peter/Le Sueur-Henderson 3-1 in the semifinal round. Laura Hillman scored 2 goals and Amy Leach, 1, for Albert Lea.
• The United South Central basketball team defeated New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva 61-44. Ben Wetzell scored 13 points, Ryan Treptow and Justin Youngblom, 12 each, and Chris Vondracek, 10.
• Michael Yocom scored 16 points and Matt Webb 11 for Glenville-Emmons in their 37-24 basketball win over Grand Meadow.
