Austin murder case could reach an end with no living person to charge

Medical examiners in Olmsted and Ramsey counties have not yet released autopsy results for the father who died in a suspected homicide by his son’s hand in Austin on Feb. 1.

The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is also still investigating the case, in which officials believe 46-year-old Craig Seberson killed his 86-year-old father, Dennis Seberson, in the front yard of apartments at 510 Fourth St. NW at about 3 a.m. Craig died near Waseca at 4:03 a.m. after a police chase reached speeds of 130 mph, and Craig’s vehicle rolled into a ditch and ejected him, according to the BCA. Reports simply stated Dennis died of blunt force trauma to the head.

BCA officials would not say when the investigation may be complete. Autopsy results could take more than 60 days after the incident. After results are revealed, the county attorney in which the reported murder happened determines the legal course of action. In this case, that could mean nothing.

Mower County Attorney Kristen Nelsen said her office would review the investigation and determine if Craig was responsible for the death. If so, there would be no one to charge at that point.

A Medical Examiner’s Office report states Craig Seberson died when his 2001 Saab 9-3 crashed south of Waseca following a lengthy run from law enforcement, which included a run through Freeborn County mostly on paved county roads. The preliminary autopsy found Craig died of head injuries and probable mechanical asphyxia associated with the crash.
