MINNEAPOLIS — Minnesota’s Trevor Mbakwe (im-BAHK’-way) is the Big Ten’s winner of the latest Player of the Week award.
Mbakwe had a season-high 21 points and 12 rebounds last Tuesday in Minnesota’s victory over Indiana, then the top-ranked team in The Associated Press poll. Mbakwe followed that up with 13 points and 13 rebounds in Saturday’s win over Penn State.
He’s the first Gophers player honored since Andre Hollins earlier this season, the week of Nov. 26.
Micaella Riche (mee-KAY-lah REE’-chay) received the same honor on the women’s side Monday after averaging 20.5 points and 10 rebounds in victories over Penn State and Indiana.
Also, sophomore guard Rachel Banham was named to the All-Big Ten first team by the league’s head coaches.
The Gophers start the conference tournament Thursday against Ohio State.
