MINNEAPOLIS — The Star Tribune has won two Pulitzer Prizes, for Local Reporting and Editorial Cartooning.

Brad Schrade, Jeremy Olson and Glenn Howatt were honored Monday for coverage of a sharp increase in infant deaths at home day cares in Minnesota.

In her Pulitzer nomination letter, Star Tribune editor Nancy Barnes said the Minneapolis newspaper devoted nine months to the project.

As a result of the Star Tribune’s series, the Minnesota Department of Human Services has called for more training of home day care providers to help prevent child deaths at in-home day cares.

Barnes calls winning two Pulitzers “a great day” for her newsroom.

Star Tribune cartoonist Steve Sack won the Editorial Cartooning Pulitzer.

It’s the first Pulitzer for the 59-year-old Sack, who has been with the Minneapolis newspaper for 35 years. He previously was a finalist.

Sack is known for his sharp political caricatures. He walked into the newsroom Monday carrying a bottle of sparkling wine, and called the win humbling.

Sack said he comes home “happy and proud” every day working at the Star Tribune.

The Star Tribune last won a Pulitzer in 1990, for Investigative Reporting.
